Safe starting point
560–720 px
Modal width
Applies to Mobile to large desktop
How wide a modal or dialog should be. These are practical starting ranges, not standards. On mobile, avoid a tiny desktop-style modal squeezed into the screen: anything beyond a short confirmation works better near full width or full screen.
- Mobile
- Full width or full screen
- Tablet
- Sized to content, inside the page margins
- Laptop

Depends on how much the modal holds, whether it contains a form, touch or pointer. A starting point, not a correct value.
- 400–480
- Small. Confirmations and single decisions.
- 560–720
- Medium. A short form or a few settings.
- 800–960
- Large. Content that needs two columns or a preview. Ask whether it should be a page.
Why?
A modal should be as wide as its content needs and no wider. On a phone there is no room for a margin around it that does any good.
When to deviate. If a modal needs the large size on desktop, or scrolls on mobile, it is often a page or a full-screen step instead.
Common mistakes (3)
- A fixed desktop width that overflows a phone.
- A small centred box on mobile with most of the screen dimmed around it.
- A long form in a modal that scrolls inside a page that also scrolls.
